Food & Wine in the Riverland
On one of our first trips to the Riverland, we took a tour through the Backwaters near Renmark and we still talk about it and recommend it at every opportunity.....it was simply unforgettable. Since that time we've also visited the backwater near Kingston On Murray and again, enjoyed another fantastic experience. If you're heading up to the riverland we strongly recommend a visit to these "secret" places which are only accessible by small boat and require local knowledge, you'll leave with a far better understanding of this mighty waterway.
A houseboating holiday is obviously the first choice for many who travel to the Riverland and, as this stretch of the Murray is completely different to the lower reaches, it offers a totally different experience. A 'must-do', even for day trippers up from Adelaide, is a trip to Banrock Station. Depending on your level of fitness and available time, you can explore their magnificent wetlands and learn about the environmental importance of areas such as this. Take a tour along the boardwalks and work up an appetite for a magnificent meal (accompanied by a glass of wine of course!) on the outdoor deck of the Wine and Wetlands Centre. We always fill the car with bags of fresh oranges when we travel through the Riverland, they're hard to resist. Remember that this region enjoys more sunshine than anywhere else so even if it's raining in Adelaide, you can generally bet that the sun will be shining in the Riverland.
