Eyre Peninsula

When the Discover team contemplates South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula, our thoughts immediately turn to Baird Bay over near Streaky Bay on the west coast. This is where you can participate in one of the best adventures we've found; swimming with sea lions! Spending a morning or afternoon with these playful creatures simply is a "must-do" for anyone who feels comfortable wearing a snorkel.

Other amazing experiences found on Eyre Peninsula include swimming with Tuna, Dolphins and diving with Giant Cuttlefish or even the worlds supreme marine predator; The Great White Shark. A six-hour drive or 45 minute flight from Adelaide, it’s the “Aquaculture capital” of Australia, so it’s not surprising that many of the region’s tourism experiences are tailored around the ocean and what can be found in it.

Port Lincoln’s Boston Bay is three times the size of Sydney Harbour, it’s a massive waterway that’s in constant use with commercial ships, recreational and professional fishing boats, sailing yachts, dinghies and tenders from the many tuna, mussel and oyster farms a common sight.

Other places on Eyre Peninsula that we have fallen in love with include the Gawler Ranges and we always enjoy drive trips which follow the coastline west of Port Lincoln. Picturesque stop-off points include Coffin Bay, Elliston, Venus Bay, Murphy’s Haystacks and Streaky Bay.

In Winter (June-October) visitors from around the globe head to South Australia’s “whale playground”. Famous for its land based viewing of around 100 Southern Right Whales, Head of Bight is a popular stop-off point for many Nullarbor travellers as it also offers spectacular views of the Bunda cliffs all year round. Ceduna is a good base for those who want to visit this part of the southern coast.

Seaside towns along the Spencer Gulf coastline such as Tumby Bay, Cowell and Port Neill are popular family holiday destinations as they offer suitable accommodation options, safe swimming and recreational boating opportunities. For those who like to travel further afield or even off-road, it’s hard to go past the scenic splendour of Fowlers Bay where stunning white sand dunes almost encroach on the town itself.

Port Lincoln is the ideal central base to explore The Eyre Peninsula so why not fly over or jump in a car to discover some of the many secrets to be found in this wonderful part of South Australia.
