SA History on Glass - Flower Day

Information

Adelaide is known as the Festival City but our famous festival of arts had an impact on a much earlier festival - Flower Day. The first Flower Day was in 1938. It was hoped that the community would embrace the annual occasion to beautify city and suburban streets and that Adelaide would eventually become famous throughout the British Empire. Volunteers and community groups worked each year to create floral carpets and themed exhibits. In a time of British loyalty, many displays were nationalistic and included the union jack and Australian flag.
