SA History on Glass - The Royal Show

Information

For most of us, Wayville is the home of the Royal Show but for many years community gatherings of this type were always held in the city. This shot from the History on Glass collection was taken in the 1900s when the exhibition grounds on the banks of the Torrens were a regular venue for agricultural shows. Crowds were drawn to the central oval where the focus was on ring events such as grand parades, livestock shows, sheaf tossing and horse gymkhanas. Flanking the ring were tents housing buggy and sulky exhibitions, sideshow alleys and bandstands.
